Trauma is one of those buzz words that get people talking: what does it mean? Do I have it? Do YOU have it? Is it bad enough to get help? What if someone else says I have it and I don’t believe them?

IMF believes there’s “no right way” to work with distressing memories, big losses, life stressors, job transitions, recovery from unhelpful mental health or medical treatment…

So whether or not you have trauma, have experienced trauma, or are traumatized (or none of the above), we recognize some situations just knock us off balance. We question what step to take next and sometimes we feel completely stuck and frozen. Any situation, or imagined situation, that takes over our nervous system can be traumatic. You don’t have to take the next step alone.

The Trauma Processing Group is offered in conjunction with other services at IMF or elsewhere, and is also available as a stand-alone service for adults ages 18+. Because some of the hardest things we experience are difficult to put into words, this therapy group will you help you find connection and safety through:

  • Creative Arts – music, art, meditation, table-top role play games
  • Timeline Therapy – a great way to make sense of your life in a chronological order without diving too deep into the memories
  • Parts work – utilizing Internal Family Systems, we can get to know different parts of us that often show up as self-talk, daydreaming, distracting, over-producing, and freezing when stress and fear increase
  • Interpersonal processing – talking as a group helps each of us not feel as alone in our challenges and opens up space for new experiences, strategies, and new ways of relating with others

This group is a great add-on to another group at IMF, such as RPR or Roll to Heal, and is a low-stakes way to jump into group therapy for the first time.
