Chances are, if you’re doing internet research in search of a outpatient treatment program, you are familiar with terms and phrases such as:

  • Residential facility
  • Intervention
  • 12-step
  • Evidence-based
  • IOP
  • Support team

What do these terms really mean? While they each have a clinical definition, they really mean different things to different people. Substance abuse and compulsive behaviors, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and more, carry a hefty stigma in our society, and while the field of mental health has come a long way in the treatment of such concerns, there is still a long way to go.

The Intensive is designed to close a little more of that gap and meet you where you actually are, today.

Our Treatment Model

While we support and even encourage our clients to participate in a peer-based, free, community program like a 12-step or similar support group, The Intensive utilizes different treatment approaches within the program.

One of the main cornerstones of our approach is Harm Reduction.

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm Reduction is a compilation of public policies and programs designed to reduce negative consequences of drug and alcohol use. The approach, however, goes far beyond substance use and is applicable for each of us.

Harm Reduction strategies have been in place for several decades, but are not widely utilized in the United States as of yet.

However, IMF Counseling aligns with the roots of the harm reduction model:

  • Justice
  • Dignity
  • A non-judgmental approach to the use of legal and illegal substances.

Even more important is our view of the person who is unable to work due to severe depression, a person who uses substances, and/or engages in risky behaviors such as gambling, internet use, video gaming, and sexual acting out behaviors, a person who has consistent suicidal thoughts and even plans; They are just that – a person. Not a number, not a label, not a clinical term. A human – granted freedom to exercise personal rights and responsibilities.

Hand Left Up

When we say harm reduction, many people hear “controlled drinking.” Or “allowing bad behavior.” Or “a death sentence.” What we are saying and what we mean is reducing harm. Reducing the chance of overdose. Reducing the chance of job loss. Reducing vehicle accidents.

There are many interventions, tools, and research-based and backed studies that are favorable toward the outcomes of the harm reduction model. The Intensive staff has advanced training in both the 12-step and harm reduction models of treatment and is well-versed in providing a high standard of care for you and your loved ones. There is no right way to do mental health treatment, but there is a right way to treat people: with autonomy, empathy, and respect. IMF Counseling does just that.
